September Is Birthday Season (And We Have the Stats to Prove It)

Lydia McDonald

Is it just us, or does absolutely everyone have a birthday in September? Your calendar is full, your bank account is looking nervous and somehow there’s another birthday dinner every weekend. Well, it turns out September really is a bit of a birthday hotspot. According to the Office for National Statistics, eight of the ten most common birthdays in England and Wales fall towards the end of September, with the other two landing in early October (Office for National Statistics, 2015). So if it feels like you've been buying birthday cards and presents non-stop since the end of August, you aren't imagining it. September is officially birthday central.

And there’s one date in particular that takes the birthday crown. 27 September was found to be the most common date of birth in England and Wales when looking at average daily births between 2001 and 2021, with an average of 1,993 babies arriving on that date each year (Office for National Statistics, 2023). That’s nearly 2,000 people who can all claim the same birthday. Imagine the group chat.

So, September Gifting?

Of course, all these September birthdays mean one very important thing for the rest of us: a LOT of gifting. September can feel like one giant game of birthday bingo, where every time you think you’re done buying presents, another name appears on the calendar. Your best friend's birthday, your sister's birthday, your colleague's birthday, your partner's birthday… and then there's that person you haven't spoken to since university who has somehow invited you to their birthday drinks. Suddenly, you need a present. And you need one quickly.

The sweet solution to September birthday panic

Luckily, we think we've found a pretty easy answer to the age-old question of “What on earth do I buy them?” Sweets. Because honestly, who doesn't want to open a present and find it filled with their favourite treats? Whether you're looking for something big and impressive, something personalised or just a little something to make them smile, a sweetie gift is a pretty safe bet. There's something wonderfully nostalgic about getting a giant jar of sweets for your birthday, and at Treat Kitchen we've made it our business to make those sweet gifts even more fun.

From message bottles that say what you're probably thinking anyway, to jars packed with classic favourites and treats made for sharing (or absolutely not sharing - we don't judge), there are plenty of ways to make someone's birthday a little sweeter. And because September seems determined to throw another birthday at you every five minutes, having a few sweet gift ideas up your sleeve might just save the day.

September babies, this one's for you

So, to all the September babies out there: happy birthday! You were born during one of the busiest birthday periods of the year, which means you have every right to make a big deal of it. More cake? Obviously. More presents? Absolutely. A giant jar of sweets? We thought you'd never ask. And to everyone currently wondering why their September calendar is completely packed, take comfort in knowing that it's not just your social circle. The stats back you up.

So grab the birthday cards, put the kettle on, order the sweets and get ready for another September filled with cake, candles and “I can't believe you're 30 already!” conversations. Because if there’s one thing September has taught us, it's that there's always another birthday around the corner.
