Black Friday - a time for treating, shopping and sometimes, returning! We all look forward to it and we all know what it means – lots of your favourite shops with offers and discounts galore. Sounds almost heavenly, right?
Where did Black Friday begin?
Well, while it’s all the rage in the UK, Black Friday did in fact originate from the USA, and can be traced back as far as the 1960s! The term ‘Black Friday’ was derived from the accounts of stores moving over from the ‘red’ to the ‘black’ following Thanksgiving Christmas. In the early stages of Black Friday, it was near enough an absolute guarantee that every shop and shopping centre would profit and, as the Americans put it, ‘go into the black’.
Not to say a great deal has changed today in terms of excited shoppers hitting the stores early to get the best deals with the latest gadgets and up and coming trends, but Colour Friday has brought about a whole new approach to Black Friday – and we’re here for it!
So, what is Colour Friday and how can you get involved?
‘Colour Friday’ was created by UK Ambassador for Creative Small Businesses Holly Tucker last year, in a bid to “kickstart a retail revolution for Christmas shoppers”.
In the hustle and bustle of Black Friday, it can be very easy to get caught up in a shopping frenzy of your favourite high street stores and miss out on some of the local gems that are often overlooked during such periods. The aim of Colour Friday is to encourage the nation to celebrate the creative flair that comes from independent stores and small businesses, because let’s face it – they’re pretty impressive 😏
It’s that simple - just shop from small businesses and independent stores!
While we’re not shy of a Black Friday offer, or two - we’re always on the look-out to see how we can also give back. Last year we donated all takings from our Treat Kitchen shop in Victoria Centre to local charity Double Impact.
So, as lovely as a bargain might be, why not give a small independent shop a visit during Black Friday this year and add a bit of Colour to one of the busiest times of the year!
